March 2 (GeokHub) Apple unveiled the iPhone 17e on Monday, introducing a more affordable smartphone designed to strengthen its position in the highly competitive global handset market. The device starts at $599 with 256GB of storage, offering significantly higher base capacity than previous entry-level models.
The new phone arrives at a time when rising memory chip prices and supply constraints are affecting smartphone production across the industry. By keeping the starting price unchanged while doubling storage, Apple appears to be absorbing some of the component cost increases to make the device more attractive to consumers.
Industry analysts say the move effectively represents a value upgrade for buyers, since users previously had to pay extra to access the higher storage capacity now included in the base model.
Faster Performance with A19 Chip
The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 processor, built using advanced 3-nanometer manufacturing technology. The chip delivers improved performance and efficiency, bringing the company’s newest processing technology to its entry-level lineup.
Apple also introduced a new C1X modem in the device. According to the company, the modem offers faster cellular connectivity while improving battery efficiency.
These upgrades aim to ensure that even Apple’s more affordable smartphone models remain competitive with mid-range devices from rival manufacturers.
MagSafe Comes to the “e” Series
For the first time, the iPhone “e” series will support MagSafe, Apple’s magnetic accessory system. The feature allows users to attach compatible chargers, wallets, and other accessories magnetically.
MagSafe also enables wireless charging speeds of up to 15 watts, which is faster than the standard Qi charging available on earlier models in the lineup.
The addition expands the device’s compatibility with Apple’s growing ecosystem of accessories.
Global Availability
Customers in more than 70 countries and regions will be able to pre-order the iPhone 17e starting Wednesday at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time, with retail availability beginning March 11.
The launch is part of Apple’s strategy to maintain strong global smartphone sales while appealing to price-sensitive consumers who still want premium features.
Apple Also Introduces New iPad Air
Alongside the new smartphone, Apple announced a redesigned iPad Air powered by the M4 chip. The updated tablet lineup includes:
- 11-inch model starting at $599
- 13-inch model starting at $799
The update signals Apple’s continued push to upgrade its device ecosystem with more powerful processors capable of supporting advanced applications and AI-driven features.
AI Developments Around Siri
Separately, industry reports suggest Apple is exploring ways to improve its voice assistant capabilities. One proposal reportedly under discussion involves hosting infrastructure in data centers to support a future version of Siri powered by advanced AI models, while maintaining Apple’s strict privacy standards.
If implemented, such integration could significantly expand Siri’s capabilities in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
