NEW DELHI, Feb 17 (GEokHub) — India’s information minister has issued a strong warning to global technology platforms, saying companies such as YouTube, Meta, X and Netflix must operate strictly within the country’s constitutional framework following the introduction of tougher content removal rules.
Speaking during the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that multinational digital platforms must respect India’s legal and cultural context while conducting business in the country.
“It is very important for multinational companies to understand the cultural framework of the country in which they operate,” Vaishnaw said during a media briefing.
Stricter Content Takedown Timeline
The remarks come just days after the Indian government significantly shortened the deadline for removing unlawful online content. Social media companies must now take down flagged illegal material within three hours of receiving notice — a sharp reduction from the previous 36-hour window.
The move is expected to increase compliance pressure on global tech companies operating in India, one of the world’s largest digital markets. The tighter timeline could require platforms to strengthen monitoring systems, moderation teams, and automated detection technologies.
Deepfake Regulation in Focus
Vaishnaw also highlighted concerns over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence to create deepfakes. He indicated that the government is pushing for stronger regulation in this area and has already begun discussions with industry players on potential safeguards.
Deepfake technology has become a rising concern globally, with governments demanding stricter oversight as AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated and difficult to detect.
Global Scrutiny of Big Tech
India’s tougher stance reflects broader international pressure on social media platforms. From Europe to Latin America, regulators are calling for faster removal of harmful or illegal content and greater corporate accountability.
