Google and India’s telecom giant Reliance Jio announced a landmark partnership today that promises to deliver free access to Google’s Gemini AI platform for up to 505 million Jio users across the country. The initiative is part of a broader push to accelerate AI adoption in India, including tools and support for both consumers and businesses.
Under the agreement, eligible Jio subscribers will receive 18 months of complimentary access to Gemini Pro — Google’s premium AI offering — at no additional cost. The package includes features such as 2 terabytes of cloud storage, advanced image and video generation models, and unrestricted use of the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. For comparison, the full retail value of this package is roughly ₹35,100 (about US $399).
By bundling high-end AI access with its mobile services, Jio is positioning itself to become a major gateway to generative AI tools for millions of Indian users. The rollout will start with younger subscribers aged 18 to 25 who have unlimited 5 G plans and eventually expand to cover all qualifying Jio users nationwide.
Google, meanwhile, aims to use the tie-up to deepen its footprint in India’s rapidly growing digital economy. The partnership also includes a joint push into enterprise solutions: Google Cloud and Jio’s AI division will support Indian businesses with access to Google’s AI hardware accelerators and help deploy Gemini Enterprise for workflow and agent automation.
This move comes at a time when India is maneuvering into a pivotal role in global AI development. For Google and Reliance, the benefits are broad: subscriber growth, data insights, and stronger positioning in a market of nearly one billion internet users.
Yet execution risks remain substantial. Ensuring consistent service performance at scale, managing cloud infrastructure demands, and converting free users into paid customers are all challenges ahead. There are also regulatory considerations: the Indian government’s proposed AI rules now require transparent disclosures of AI-generated content and increased auditability of models. In effect, Google and Jio will be operating under heightened scrutiny.
