VIENNA, March 27 (GeokHub) — Austria’s three-party, conservative-led government announced plans to ban social media use for children under 14, citing concerns over addictive algorithms and harmful content. The proposal aims to protect minors from exposure to sexualized material and the negative mental health impacts associated with prolonged social media use.

The government has yet to finalize when the ban would take effect or the exact mechanisms for enforcement. Draft legislation is expected by the end of June, according to Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler and junior digitization minister Alexander Proell.

Protecting Children from Harmful Content

Babler emphasized the urgency of the move, stating:

“We will decisively protect children and young people in future from the negative effects of social media. We will no longer stand by and watch while these platforms make our children addicted and often also sick.”

The proposed ban will not target specific platforms. Instead, authorities plan to evaluate social media services based on the addictive nature of their algorithms and the presence of harmful content, such as sexualized violence.

Global Trend Towards Youth Protection Online

Austria is joining a growing list of countries considering restrictions on underage social media access. Australia implemented a similar ban for children under 16 last December, becoming the first country to do so. France’s lower house approved a ban for under-15s in January, and other nations are examining comparable measures to safeguard minors.

The initiative reflects increasing concern over social media’s impact on young people’s mental health, learning, and overall well-being, as governments seek to strike a balance between digital engagement and safety.
