CAPE CANAVERAL, March 31 (GeokHub) — Amazon has secured a major aviation partnership with Delta Air Lines to provide next-generation in-flight Wi-Fi, intensifying competition with SpaceX’s Starlink network.

Under the agreement, Amazon’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet service will be installed on 500 Delta aircraft, with rollout expected to begin in 2028 for flights across the United States.

The deal marks Amazon’s second major airline partnership, following an earlier agreement with JetBlue. Airlines are increasingly turning to low-orbit satellite constellations to deliver faster and more reliable onboard internet services.

Amazon’s push places it in direct competition with Starlink, the satellite internet network developed by Elon Musk, which already leads the market with a significantly larger satellite network and multiple airline partnerships.

Why Delta Chose Amazon

Delta’s decision was influenced in part by its existing relationship with Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing arm. The airline currently provides Wi-Fi through other satellite providers but is seeking improved performance and scalability for its growing customer base.

The new system is expected to deliver faster speeds and fewer disruptions compared to traditional satellite services.

Amazon’s Satellite Ambitions

Amazon has invested billions of dollars into building its satellite internet network, launching over 200 satellites since 2025 and planning an accelerated rollout with dozens of additional launches in the coming year.

The company aims to begin commercial service soon, starting in limited regions before expanding globally as its satellite constellation grows.

Starlink’s Strong Lead

Despite Amazon’s progress, Starlink remains far ahead, having deployed thousands of satellites since 2019. Its rapid expansion has been supported by reusable rocket technology, allowing faster and more cost-efficient launches.

Starlink has already secured deals with several major airlines, reinforcing its early lead in the in-flight connectivity market.

Future of Airline Connectivity

The growing competition between Amazon and Starlink signals a broader shift in aviation, where high-speed internet is becoming a standard passenger expectation.

As both companies race to expand their satellite networks, airlines are likely to benefit from improved technology and competitive pricing—ultimately enhancing the in-flight experience for millions of travelers worldwide.
