WASHINGTON, March 4 (GeokHub) The United States military has carried out a naval strike that sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, according to American officials familiar with the operation. The incident, which unfolded in the Indian Ocean, has intensified an already escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Three U.S. officials confirmed that the vessel was targeted in a military operation earlier this week. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the mission, said the strike was executed by a U.S. submarine operating in the region.
Following the strike, a distress signal was reportedly transmitted from the Iranian vessel, prompting Sri Lanka’s armed forces to initiate a search-and-rescue operation. Authorities in Colombo said naval teams rescued at least 32 individuals from the water and recovered several bodies. Initial local reports suggested that more than 100 crew members could be unaccounted for, though a Sri Lankan navy spokesperson later disputed that figure and said casualty numbers remain under verification.
Sri Lankan defense officials acknowledged that the ship appeared to have been struck by a submarine, but declined to publicly attribute responsibility. The Sri Lankan navy emphasized that investigations into the exact cause of the sinking are ongoing and cautioned against premature conclusions.
The strike marks a significant escalation in U.S. operations targeting Iranian naval assets. American military officials have described maritime operations as a central component of their broader campaign aimed at limiting Iran’s naval capabilities. On Tuesday, U.S. Central Command stated that multiple Iranian warships had already been destroyed in recent days and indicated that further actions could follow.
Regional analysts warn that the incident could widen tensions across the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf shipping lanes, areas vital to global trade and energy supply routes. Sri Lanka, strategically positioned along major maritime corridors, now finds itself navigating the diplomatic fallout of a confrontation between two major powers.
Tehran has not yet issued a comprehensive public response to the reported sinking. However, observers expect diplomatic protests and potential retaliatory measures as the situation develops.
