Russia Warns U.S. Against Striking Iran, Citing Risk of “Nuclear Catastrophe”
Russia has sternly cautioned the United States against direct military intervention in Iran, with officials warning that it could “radically destabilise” the Middle East and bring the world “millimetres” from nuclear disaster .
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, speaking to Interfax at an economic forum, emphasized that U.S. strikes would severely exacerbate regional instability . He added that such action would “radically destabilise the entire situation”—a warning reinforced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who cited ongoing Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as bringing the world dangerously close to catastrophe.
Russia, which formalized a 20-year strategic partnership with Iran in January, asserted that while the pact does not include military defense obligations, it remains concerned over "speculative" proposals for U.S. military action.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged all parties—including Israel and the U.S.—to de-escalate and return to diplomacy. Putin has offered Moscow’s services to mediate the conflict, although the offer has not been accepted.
