Trump Unveils $175 Billion 'Golden Dome' Missile Defense System Targeting Space-Based Threats

1.0x

President Donald Trump has announced the development of a comprehensive missile defense system named the "Golden Dome," aiming to shield the United States from advanced missile threats, including those launched from space. The initiative, unveiled on May 20, 2025, is projected to cost approximately $175 billion over three years, with potential expenses reaching up to $542 billion over two decades, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Drawing inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome, the Golden Dome is designed to be a multilayered defense system that integrates satellites, sensors, and interceptors to detect and neutralize various missile threats, such as ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles . This marks the first time the U.S. plans to deploy weapons in space as part of its defense strategy.

General Michael Guetlein of the U.S. Space Force has been appointed to oversee the project, which is expected to achieve initial operational capability by the end of Trump's term in January 2029 . The system's development will involve collaboration with private defense contractors, including potential partnerships with companies like SpaceX and Lockheed Martin.

While the administration emphasizes the Golden Dome's role in countering emerging threats from nations such as Russia, China, and North Korea, critics express concerns over the project's feasibility, cost, and the potential escalation of an arms race in space . Lawmakers have called for thorough evaluations of the system's strategic implications and financial viability.

The Golden Dome represents a significant shift in U.S. defense policy, highlighting a move towards space-based military capabilities in response to evolving global threats.
