Zelenskyy Condemns U.S. Silence Following Russia's Largest Air Assault on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly criticized the United States for its muted response to Russia's most extensive aerial attack since the onset of the war in 2022. The assault involved the launch of 298 drones and 69 missiles across multiple Ukrainian cities, resulting in at least 12 civilian deaths, including three children, and over 60 injuries.
In a statement, Zelenskyy asserted that the lack of a strong U.S. response "only encourages Putin," emphasizing that international silence in the face of such aggression emboldens Russia's actions. He called for immediate and decisive sanctions against Moscow, arguing that diplomatic overtures have failed to deter continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians.
The United States' reaction has been notably restrained. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg condemned the attacks as violations of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols but stopped short of announcing new sanctions or military support. This contrasts with European leaders, such as EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who have advocated for intensified pressure on Russia.
The timing of the assault coincided with a significant prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, involving 1,000 detainees from each side. While this swap was seen as a diplomatic breakthrough, the subsequent escalation in attacks has cast doubt on the effectiveness of ongoing peace negotiations.
Ukrainian officials have highlighted the use of foreign-supplied weaponry by Russia, including North Korean missiles and Iranian-designed drones, in the recent attacks. They stress the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems and assert that only a robust international response can deter further aggression.
