King Charles Swaps Informal Scotland Plans for Full State Visit with Trump
King Charles III has revised the original plan for President Donald Trump’s upcoming U.K. visit. Details confirmed by Buckingham Palace show a shift from a casual summer meeting in Scotland to a formal state visit this September — complete with traditional pomp, ceremony, and a state banquet at Windsor Castle.
An official letter, known as a “manu regia”, was personally signed by the King and delivered to the White House, marking the formal invitation. Initially, Charles had proposed a more low-key encounter at Balmoral or Dumfries House, but schedule conflicts led to the cancellation of that option.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly urged for a full ceremonial state visit this autumn, in a move seen as aligning more closely with Trump’s preferences and the weight of diplomatic protocol — despite royal desires for a more measured approach .
The visit will be the first second state visit a U.S. president has received in modern royal history. Guests are expected to tour Windsor Castle, participate in a carriage procession, and attend a grand state banquet with King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton in attendance.
